Signs of A Bee Or Wasp Infestation

Signs of A Bee Or Wasp Infestation

Buzz, buzz, buzz, there it is again. You’ve been hearing an angry little hum every morning for the last week or so, like a mini lawn mower cutting through the air and just like that, they begin to appear. Wasps and/or bees everywhere – they’re waiting when you hang out the laundry, the kids are afraid to go outside and you’re not 100% sure if everyone isn’t allergic on the account of never being stung before. And you don’t want to find out. So how do you tell the difference between a full scale wasp problem and a few flying insects passing through?

Wasp and Bee 101: Do Wasps Do Anything Good Like Bees?

Wasps are ecological superstars – in addition to pollinating plants and flowers like bees, our waspy pals also prey on pests like flies, beetles and caterpillars.

More Wasps, More Bees, More Activity

Like we’ve already briefly mentioned, an increase in activity and numbers is the most obvious sign of a growing problem. You may notice they gravitate to a certain side of the house, garage or fence, indicating they have a nest nearby or somewhere more immediate, like your property.

Wasp and Bee 101: What Do You Do if You Have a Bees Nest?

Nothing. You back away slowly and try not to disturb the hordes of potential stinging pain contained within. There are things you should do yourself – IKEA furniture or putting up basic shelves – but getting rid of a bee or wasp nest is not one of them. If they feel threatened, they will attack with a vengeance. Instead, call Canberra Pest Control and let one of our experienced technicians take care of your stinging insect problems.

You’ve Found a Nest

Bees and wasps don’t leave a lot of traces behind like ants or cockroaches, with some species making their homes publicly, living loud and proud for all to see. These species affix their nests to walls, posts, fences, eaves and trees. If you have little ones, show them pictures of both bees and wasps, including the differences between their nests or hives, so they know not to approach it or go near it. Most of the time though, you’ll hear the nest without seeing it or notice any activity at all. Although we’ve already said they like to live in the open, European Wasps and Bees are an exception. These prolific nest builders prefer to make their home inside

yours, taking advantage of unsealed external walls to establish their colonies in cavities, roof voids and other concealed spaces. European wasps will also make their nests underground with multiple openings – keep an eye for activity and avoid the area.

Did you know… wasps build their nests by scraping up wood fibres and pulping it up in their mouths before slowly constructing their home, while bees use waxy secretions to create the works of art you commonly see on movies and TV shows.
